Immerse yourself in Morocco’s spiritual and scholarly heart with a knowledgeable local guide. Start your exploration in Fes, Morocco’s oldest capital, at the famed Blue Gate, or Bab Boujloud. As you pass through, enter a different era, wandering through the labyrinthine medieval medina, filled with narrow alleys, lively souks, traditional crafts, and the unique charm of mules and donkeys. Visit the historic Jewish quarter, the Mellah, and admire the grand gate of the Royal Palace. Your driver will then take you to an ancient hilltop fortress, offering stunning panoramic views of the city. On your return, discover the delicate art of 12th-century ceramic craftsmanship. Continue your journey with stops at key sites, such as Souk Seffarine, Medersa Bou Inania, and the oldest university in the world, passing by the Mosque of Quaraouin. End your day with a peaceful return to your riad, where a traditional meal will be served.
After enjoying a traditional breakfast, we’ll journey south from the historic capital. As the Middle Atlas Mountains come into view, we’ll arrive in Ifrane, known as the “Moroccan Swiss City,” with its distinct Swiss-inspired architecture. We’ll make a stop in a sprawling cedar forest, where you’ll have the chance to see and feed Barbary apes. Continuing to Midelt for lunch, the scenery gradually transforms from lush greenery to the arid hues of the desert. Passing through Errachidia, we draw closer to the Merzouga desert, where camel caravans await to take you across the golden dunes, providing a breathtaking view of the sunset. Upon reaching your camp, you’ll enjoy a delicious meal under a sky filled with stars, accompanied by the rhythms of Berber music around a campfire.
Experience the authenticity of the Merzouga desert, starting after breakfast. Our driver will pick you up for a journey through the vast Sahara dunes, visiting famous fossil sites and meeting Berber nomad families. This is a unique opportunity to learn about their history, lifestyle, and traditions while enjoying mint tea in their tents. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the open air. Later, return to the camp for a refreshing shower, followed by free time to explore the dunes at sunset or engage in optional activities like quad biking. Conclude your day with dinner and tea served at the camp.
Experiencing a sunrise in the Sahara is truly unforgettable. We encourage you to find a perfect vantage point to witness the sun slowly lighting up the golden dunes. After breakfast, begin a relaxed drive towards Boumalne Dades Gorge. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to explore ancient underground irrigation canals, dating back to the 11th to 14th centuries, which demonstrate the remarkable ingenuity of the Berber tribes in channeling mountain water to their orchards. Enjoy lunch at a traditional local restaurant.
Continuing your journey through Tinghir city to Dades Gorge, take some time to wander freely through the expansive canyon, walking beside the flowing water. As you near the gorge, the striking architecture of old sandcastles nestled within the palm oasis will emerge, offering sweeping views of the area’s famous “Monkey Toes” rock formations. By evening, you will reach your Riad, where you can relax and enjoy a delicious dinner.
After breakfast, continue your journey through Rose Valley in Kalaat Magouna, famous for its traditional rose festival. You’ll have the opportunity to visit women’s cooperatives that produce natural perfumes, reflecting the rich cultural significance of scents in Morocco. Next, head to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” for its diverse landscapes and bright atmosphere, which has long attracted filmmakers. A visit to Atlas Studios will reveal its role in producing major films such as “Game of Thrones” and “Gladiator.”
By midday, you’ll arrive at Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that once served as a crucial caravan trading post, where lunch will be provided. As you travel through the Ounilla Valley, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of clay and mud houses that highlight the unique lifestyle of the region. Embark on a captivating exploration of Marrakech, often referred to as the Red City, the City of the Seven Holy Men, or Bahja by locals. After breakfast, a knowledgeable local guide will lead you through the labyrinthine alleys of the ancient medina, revealing hidden gems such as the Bahia Palace, Medersa Ben Youssef, and the renowned Koutoubia Mosque. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the old souks, where you can engage with local crafts and experience the lively energy of Jamaa el Fnaa Square, where artisans and performers showcase their skills.
Lunch will be served at a delightful restaurant. As evening approaches, delve into the vibrant nightlife of the square, where pop-up eateries offer a feast of sizzling barbecues, aromatic soups, and refreshing juices, ensuring a memorable sensory experience.
After breakfast, the journey proceeds towards Essaouira, a coastal city celebrated for its scenic beaches, historic medina, and thriving art community. Upon arrival, delve into Essaouira’s UNESCO-designated medina, vibrant markets, and bustling fishing port. Take in panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city from the historic ramparts. It was an all-round successful trip. Morocco is a beautiful country that offers so many varied landscapes. Our travel highlights were the Sahara, Fez, Marrakech, Essaouira and the idyllic mountain village of Cheffchaoen. We were able to tell our tour guide Elhoussine our wishes at any time and he immediately set about making them possible and optimizing the programme for us. We always felt safe and in good hands with our driver Mukhtar, even on the sometimes long journeys. Even in sometimes chaotic traffic situations in the middle of Marrakech, he drove us safely and calmly to our destination and also made extra stops possible. The accommodation was very good and beautiful. From luxurious riads with mosaic fountains and roof terraces to a nomad camp in the Sahara, everything was great. Our guides in Fes (Idriss) and Marrakech (Brahim) were very well informed, humorous and gave us lots of insights into the local production of goods (e.g. ceramics workshop, cloth production, argan oil production, leather tannery, carpet weavers). A clear travel recommendation from us!
